Bark: Smooth light brown when young become gray, brown to
black with age
Flower: Rosy purple; blooms in early Spring before leaves
emerge; attracts insects
Fruit: Dark purple; 1-3” long, flat bean-like pod; persistent
Foliage: Alternate, simple, heartshaped, 2-4” long, glossy, dark green leaves turn yellow in Fall
Uses: Small specimen tree, deck or patio accent, small Spring flowering tree for residential planting, lawn tree, small shade tree, and use in combination with small landscape plants
