Soil Requirements: Well-drained, moist, fertile, humus rich, well limed, sandy, clay or loam soil; not tolerant of water-logged soil, short duration flooding or compacted soil
Bark: Smooth; thin, brownish gray to black bark; matures to
black with rough, checkered ridges and plates
Flower: Lavender-purple or pink, sometimes white; blooms in
early Spring before leaves emerge; attracts insects
Fruit: Green; changes to brownish black; 1- 3” flat beanlike pod; persistent
Foliage: Alternate, simple, entire, broad-ovate to heart-shaped; medium to dark green leaves in summer turn yellow in Fall
Uses: Specimen tree, container, flowering, native tree, naturalizing and group plantings
