Soil Requirements: Well-drained, slightly alkaline to slightly
acidic, clay, loam, or sandy soil
Bark: Thin; orange brown with thin exfoliating flakes; mature
bark develops ridges and furrows with thicker flakes and plates
Flower: Yellowish orange-brown, male cones, light green, female cone, matures to reddish light brown, forms in late winter to spring, pollen may be severe allergen problem for some people. 
Fruit: Short, broad, cone, 1 ½ – 3” long by 1 ½ – 2” wide
Foliage: Spiraled arrangements, two needles per fascicle; simple, twisted, needle-like foliage with stiff, sharp apex, 2 – 4” long, fragrant. 
Uses: Buffer strips, parking lots, median strips, reclamation,
planting, specimen, wind breaks, and Christmas Trees.
